Grant could help Tenn. department build new hall

By Michelle Friesen

DAYTON, Tenn. — The Dayton City Council passed a motion Monday that would allow Fire Chief Chuck Suttles and Assistant Fire Chief Justin Jackson to apply for the SAFER Fire Grant. If approved, it would be a vital step toward building a new fire hall in North Dayton.

The SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) Grant, funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, was created to provide direct funding to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations in order to help them increase the number of trained firefighters available in their communities, according to the SAFER Grant website.

For Dayton, this could mean the hiring of three new firefighters, according to Suttles.
