La. firefighters defend court title against police

ST. BERNARD, La. — The St. Bernard Fire Department will try to defend its title this weekend when it goes up against the St. Bernard Sheriff's Office during the St. Bernard Recreation Corp.'s second annual basketball battle.

The tournament, set for Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Chalmette High School gym, 1100 E. Judge Perez Drive, will kick off with pre-game activities at 5 p.m. Department personnel from the Sheriff's Office and Fire Department will coordinate activities geared to educate children and adults about safety.

The Fire Department beat the Sheriff's Office last year, 57-54.

Admission will be $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 4-17. Children younger than 3 will be admitted free. Tickets also can be bought in advance at Car Craft, 1101 E. St. Bernard Highway, Chalmette; or at Prestige Fitness, 8309 W. Judge Perez Drive, Chalmette.

Members of this year's Fire Department team are: Mike Dragon, Brad Tregle, Reggie Bergeron, Lee Gonzales, Wayne Letort, Eric Crotwell, Mike Wolf, Craig Miller III, Joey Dullory, Louis Menesses and Nicholas Elsensohn IV.

Sheriff's Office team members are: James Pohlmann, David Mowers, Mark Poche, Walter Dornan, Robert Buckley, Ryan Laylle, Johnell Young, Brad Nuccio, Brandon Licciardi, Jason Mayer, Jodie Couture, Gene Higgins, Paul Miller, John Edwards, Warren Chambon, Carl Bartholomew, Thomas Spicuzza and Dean Brown.

The St. Bernard Recreation Corp., a nonprofit, citizen-led organization formed to improve recreation services in the parish, will donate all proceeds to the St. Bernard Recreation Department to help in rebuilding the recreation system.

Gulf Coast Bank is the event's corporate sponsor. Other businesses are invited to become sponsors as well.
